Wind Turbine Wind Turbine at Waupun School

A small-scale wind turbine installed at an elementary school in Waupun is providing students with some firsthand experience with wind power. The 1-kilowatt wind turbine, housed atop a 45-foot pole, produces emission-free electricity at wind speeds of just 6.7 mph. The unit's compact generator is creating enough electricity to power a pump used to re-circulate the water in a small stream in the school's arboretum. The project was supported with a grant from WPPI and additional funding from Waupun Utilities.
Solar Solar Energy Education in Hartford

A similar grant went to the City of Hartford for six 165-watt photovoltaic panels at the local high school, which convert solar radiation to electric energy. The school's students have been using the system to learn how the changing angle of the sun affects energy production, as well as other principles of solar power. Additional funding from Hartford Electric helped fund the solar installation.
Earth Day Challenge Earth Day Challenge and Parade in Lodi

In Lodi, Mayor Paul Fisk challenged the citizens to increase enrollments in the renewable energy program to a level on par with the leading electric utilities in the nation. Before the challenge, Lodi's enrollment level was twice the national average. Following the Earth Day appeal, participation rose to nearly 4 percent of Lodi Utilities' residential customer base — an 88 percent increase.

Lodi Utilities staff gave renewable energy an additional boost with a float in Lodi's popular "Susie the Duck Day" parade and an informational booth outside city hall. The float won an award for "Best Environmental Message."
Globe Strong Support from WPPI Communities

In 2005, our renewable energy program maintained the momentum achieved during the previous four years. Since the program's inception in 2001, participating customers have purchased more than 30 million kilowatt hours of electricity from renewable resources. This provides an environmental benefit equivalent to removing 4,250 automobiles from the highways. Participation by WPPI member customers continues to exceed national averages.
