President/CEO Profile
Mike Peters took the helm as WPPI Energy’s president and CEO in January 2011, following an extensive national search. He is an attorney with comprehensive expertise managing utility trade associations and representing both large and small electric cooperatives in a variety of forums in Kansas, Illinois and Michigan, as well as in Washington, D.C.

Peters previously served as president and CEO of the Michigan Electric Cooperative Association, where he was responsible for providing the leadership, management and strategic vision for the statewide trade association representing Michigan’s rural electric cooperative industry. Peters has also served as general legal counsel to the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives and to Kansas Electric Cooperatives, Inc.

During his 25-year utility industry career, Peters has led and served on a number of boards of directors:

  • Member and past president of the Rural Electric Statewide Managers Association.
  • Member of the Michigan Damage Prevention Board, which was established to develop and direct state one-call system policy and to protect underground utility facilities.
  • Michigan Society of Association Executives board member and legislative committee chairman.
  • Current member of the board of directors of American Transmission Co., a multi-state utility that owns, operates, builds and maintains the high-voltage electric transmission system serving portions of Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois.

He also has served on a diverse array of energy policy and trade association workgroups, including:

  • National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) National Task Force studying Service Company (SERVCO) formation and restructuring.
  • NRECA National Task Force studying distribution issues relative to restructuring and new member inclusion.
  • NRECA Climate Change Policy group.
  • Michigan Climate Action Council.
  • Michigan Governor’s 21st Century Energy Plan.
  • Michigan Public Service Commission Capacity Needs Forum.
  • The Committee to Keep Michigan Warm, a Michigan state low-income utility assistance group.
  • Founding member of the Industry Strategic Alliance Group, formed to coordinate public policy position, where possible, between cooperatives, municipal utilities, and investor-owned utilities.
  • Steering committee member for Michigan’s State Energy Optimization implementation group.
  • Michigan Saves, which was created to develop on-bill financing for customer-installed energy efficiency and renewable energy measures.
  • Michigan Public Service Commission committee on net metering and interconnection standards.

Peters holds a juris doctorate from the Washburn University School of Law and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana. He and his wife Anita reside in Madison, Wis.
