WPPI Energy’s power supply portfolio is constantly evolving to achieve the lowest possible power cost for WPPI Energy members while minimizing price risk. WPPI Energy generates power from our own plants and member generating plants under contract to WPPI Energy.

Clay Boswell - Unit 4

  • Located in Bass Brook Township, Minnesota
  • Coal-fired steam generating unit
  • WPPI Energy owns 20% of Unit 4
  • Plant operator/joint owner - Minnesota Power
  • Generating capacity - WPPI share 107.5 MW (535 MW total)
  • Equipped with a scrubber and burns low-sulphur Western coal
  • Commercial operation began January 1, 1980
  • Share acquired September 26, 1990

Elm Road Generating Station

  • Located in Oak Creek, Wisconsin
  • Two supercritical coal-fired steam generating units of 600 MW each
  • WPPI Energy owns 8.33% of total project
  • Plant operator/joint owner – We Energies
  • Generating capacity – WPPI share 100 MW (1200 MW total)
  • Units I in service

Island Street Peaking Plant

  • Located in Kaukauna, Wisconsin
  • Gas-fired combustion turbine generating unit with fuel oil backup
  • WPPI Energy owns 100% of the plant
  • Generating capacity - 52 MW
  • Commercial operation began July 1, 2004

South Fond du Lac - Unit 1

  • Located in Town of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
  • Gas-fired combustion turbine generating unit with fuel oil backup
  • WPPI Energy owns 100% of Unit 1
  • Plant operator/joint owner - Wisconsin Power & Light
  • Generating capacity - 86 MW
  • Commercial operation began May 10, 1993
  • Acquired July 1, 1991

South Fond du Lac - Unit 4

  • Located in Town of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
  • Gas-fired combustion turbine generating unit with fuel oil backup
  • WPPI Energy owns 100% of Unit 4
  • Plant operator/joint owner - Wisconsin Power & Light
  • Generating capacity - 86 MW
  • Commercial operation began June 1, 1996
  • Acquired May 1, 1996

Worthington Wind Turbines 2 & 3

  • Located on the Buffalo Ridge near Worthington, Minnesota
  • WPPI Energy owns 100% of Turbines 2 and 3
  • Plant operator/joint owner – Missouri River Energy Services
  • Generating capacity – two turbines can generate 2 MW
  • Production begins at wind speeds of 7 miles per hour
  • Tower is 325 feet tall from ground to blade tip and weighs 42 tons
