Purchased Power
In addition to our owned generation resources, WPPI Energy also purchases power under long-term cost-based requirements tariffs and fixed price contracts. The cost-based tariff purchases, which allow WPPI Energy the flexibility to vary the amount of power purchased from year to year, are maximized when average costs are lower than market costs and minimized when average costs are higher than market costs.
WPPI Energy also makes day-ahead and real-time purchases in the Midwest Independent System Operator (Midwest ISO) energy market. This allows WPPI Energy to purchase from the market when market energy is lower-cost than WPPI Energy resources, or to serve WPPI Energy load with its own resources when market energy is at a higher cost than WPPI Energy’s own resources. WPPI Energy also sells excess energy from our resources into the Midwest ISO market when WPPI Energy has economical excess resources.
